Genetic Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance for Agronomic Traits of Ethiopian Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] Landraces

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is an important food security crop mainly in semi-arid and tropical parts of the African countries. Even though it believed to be originated domesticated Ethiopia, sorghum production inhibited by limited number high yielding varieties. A field experiment was conducted at Assosa Pawe Agricultural Research Centers during 2019/20 cropping season with objective identifying landraces breeding lines grain yield, study phenotypic genotypic variability, heritability genetic advance for yield contributing traits. Forty two (42) were planted RCBD design row column arrangement replications. The result analysis variance revealed that there a significant variation among tested all evaluated characters. highest 3297Kg/ha recorded AScol19-Krm 124 followed Ya036/1 mean 3146kg/ha while lowest 817kg/ha ETSCAs 10002-2-13-1 line. Higher Phenotypic Coefficient Variation Genotypic values scored yield. High estimates broad sense found plant characters under study. Highest (97.8) Values ranged between 21.94 days physiological maturity 1934.46 gain (of percent) from 11.48 99.41 greater extent together higher studied showed evidence these traits control additive effects which means undertaking selection should lead rapid enhancement studied.
